Spreading the News

by Mary Alice Carnes, Community Relations Director

My goal for the New Year is to continue to sing out the good news about Theatre Action Project’s mission and impact. 2011 was a banner year for highlighting TAP’s work via the media–press and social media–who put the spotlight on  Sara Hickman’s The Best of Times CD to benefit TAP, Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell talking with the Courage in Action All Stars at Austin City Hall , or Nitra Gutierrez discussing how Changing Lives Youth Theatre Ensemble changes the lives of its young participants and audiences. TAP is spreading the news about how it inspires youth to be creative artists, courageous allies, critical thinkers and confident leaders, and my mission continues.

Shifting from serious to fun, who would have believed we would have a passionate “cupcake wars” on Twitter, Facebook and KEYE TV with last October’s Cupcake a Doodle Do! event? Austin proved it is serious about cupcakes and ardent about  supporting TAP.

I invite you to join the discussion. Send us your thoughts about arts education, ideas for stopping bullying in 2012, and tell us how creativity feeds your soul. Friend us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter (@TAPAustin), flip through our photo collection on Flickr, or sign up to be a TAP blog subscriber.

If you missed a TAP interview or article, check out our press page. In the meantime, here are a few highlights from 2011. Click on the links below to view, listen, or read:

The Account Executives from Texas Tower PR

December is always thought of as a time for remembrance and wishful thinking for the New Year. As I remember back over the last year, so many Theatre Action Project memories come to mind. I have only worked with TAP for 18 months but I do believe this past year was monumental. Read the rest of this entry

Making Music to Make Money for Arts Education

by Emily Watkins, Account Executive – Texas Tower PR

On a dark gloomy day, Sara Hickman, Elizabeth Wills and Patrice Pike brought sunshine to Waterloo Records in celebration of national release of The Best of Times CD benefiting Theatre Action Project.

Elizabeth Wills started off the performance with Eye of the Storm from The Best of Times. After several requests, Sarah Hickman took the stage and sang Simply, which is sung by Willie Nelson on the CD. Lastly Patrice Pike closed the live music performance with her version of Woman Waiting to Happen. All the 38 artists on the album sing Hickman’s songs. Read the rest of this entry

Join TAP and Sara Hickman at “The Best of Times” CD Release Party

Texas State Musician of the Year Sara Hickman celebrates the release of The Best of Times CD with an in-store appearance at Waterloo Records. Please come out to the CD release party on September 29th at 5 pm at Waterloo Records. The event will feature performances by Sara Hickman as well as Patrice Pike and Elizabeth Wills.

Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keen and many other Texas luminaries pay tribute to Hickman with this 38-disc compilation to benefit Theatre Action Project.

The 38-track double disc project was inspired by a recent slash in arts funding by Texas State Legislature. The compilation CD was created to raise funds for Theatre Action Project and help the organization take the arts and theatre back into the schools.

Also do us a favor and add some reviews on iTunes and Amazon to help spread the word about this incredible album and project!
