For me, it’s been a wonderful year. Probably my biggest accomplishment came on my 30th birthday. 2 years ago, I started taking drum lessons. Most people I know took music lessons as children, but stopped long ago. I didn’t let the fact that I was an adult stop me from learning a new instrument. For my 30th birthday this past summer, I decided to show off my skills. I performed as the drummer in a concert with 3 friends on guitars and bass, in front of friends and family. We played 9 original songs. This was something I was incredibly nervous to do leading up to the concert – to the point where I was mad at myself for planning it at all. But the entire concert was a huge success – I didn’t forget any of the songs! It sounded and felt amazing. And the support I felt was incredible.
At TAP, we teach youth to be leaders and artists, and it’s important to remember that this never ends. While everyone does not grow up to make a career in the arts or as a leader in their community, everyone can continue to learn, grow, and challenge themselves creatively as an artist or as a leader in various ways throughout their life. I don’t know what next year’s adventures will hold, but I look forward to finding out!
