Thanksgiving Themed Books

by Cassie Swayze, After School Programs Associate VISTA

We are gearing up for the end of the semester, final sharings, and holiday breaks in TAP After-School. There is less than one month of the Fall semester left, which is hard to believe! As TAP’s library manager, not only do I maintain our stock of storybooks, guides, and reference manuals, I also research new and exciting books. In thinking about next week’s Thanksgiving holiday I came across a few storybooks that focus on the festival’s themes of family, tradition, giving thanks, and celebrating the harvest. Here are three of my favorites:

“Hardscrabble Harvest uses rollicking verse and Ipcar’s distinctive illustrations to tell a charming story about the running battle between a farm family and the mischievous animals that plunder their fields…All summer long the young farmer and his wife are hard-pressed to protect their growing crops. But autumn comes at last, and the family is ready to celebrate its harvest bushels of red tomatoes, a cellar full of apples for cider and pumpkins for pie.”

“Poetic language and lovely oil paintings evoke the traditional and seasonal activities that occur in November. Families gather around the table for a Thanksgiving feast…Rylant’s words are simple but evocative and filled with wonderful sensory images, similes, and metaphors…the verbal images are splendidly captured in Kastner’s soft-edged, double-spread paintings, which are rendered in a palette of warm autumn colors and sepia tones. This handsome book is sure to become a new fall favorite.”

“This beautifully illustrated story reminds everyone that Thanksgiving is about opening one’s heart in welcome to the strangers who become friends and the disappointments that bring unexpected joys.”
