Rocking and Rolling with TAP After School

by Sarah Rinner, Elementary School Program Director

Fall has arrived (I hope!) and our TAP Afterschool programs are well underway!  Across Austin, Del Valle, Bastrop and Round Rock our teaching artists are rocking and rolling with their creative students. From marionettes to murals, Chinese dance to silent films, Shakespeare to commedia dell’arte, students all over central Texas are stretching their imaginations and their paintbrushes to the fullest. Maintaining the high quality of our programming through such a variety of TAP curriculum is a constant process for us, including monthly trainings for our staff and a robust program assessment method. TAP actively participates in the Youth Program Quality Initiative (YPQ) in partnership with the United Way Capital Area and the Central Texas Afterschool Network (CTAN).

On October 20, the Afterschool Alliance and afterschool programs across the nation celebrate Lights on Afterschool.   In conjunction with this national event, CTAN hosts its annual Breakfast of Champions on Oct 18th, a time for afterschool professionals and stakeholders to honor the leaders and staff that bring high quality programs to our youth. This year, TAP is honored to be a recipient of a Program Quality Champion Award for participation in the YPQ process and how we have implemented this program assessment model throughout all of our classes and trainings. TAP is proud to be part of such a dedicated group of colleagues in ensuring high quality programs for the youth in our communities.

P.S. And in the spirit of autumn, my favorite cupcake is pumpkin spicecake with cream cheese frosting. . . mmmm! Come out to Theatre Action Project’s Cupcake-A-Doodle-Do! on October 22nd from 12-3 pm at Central Market North.

Creative Action is a unique blend of art and education – for us, the two are intertwined. We believe that using the arts as a teaching method provides a fun, engaging and inspiring way to learn – it incorporates the whole mind and body.
