Excitement for School

by Sarah Rinner, Elementary School Program Director

It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down and the new school year is just around the corner.  As we close out the summer with our last camp next week, Songs for the Stage, the Theatre Action Project Afterschool Team is already busy preparing for the 2011-2012 school year.

This year we have new campuses and exciting changes as we welcome new Team Leads and our new Middle School/High School Program Director, Patrick Torres.  Patrick is settling in by now, but as we launch another year of afterschool classes, he and I are busy gearing up for our biggest afterschool program yet.  TAP will be at 40 campuses (and counting!) as we continue our programs in Del Valle ISD, Manor ISD, and Austin ISD.  We’ll be returning to Maplewood, Pickle, Rodriguez, Langford, Hart and Brown this year (to name a few), and adding in Widen Elementary, which is especially exciting as we provide our Courage to Stand program to many of the 78744 campuses every year.  Our Middle School programming extends to Bastrop ISD this fall after a fantastic summer program taught by our own Noel Gaulin, teaching artist extraordinaire. And in the works is a brand new arts program partnering with the Umlauf Sculpture Garden.

Stay tuned for a great year of creative projects and performances from the youth in our communities! We can’t wait to share more with you.

What are some of your favorite activities that got you ready for school as a child, or that you use to get your kids ready?

About creativeactionaustin

We are based in Austin, Texas and reach more than 16,000 young people every year through our unique blend of theatre and education programs. Our programs expose young people to critical social problems and offer opportunities for them to creatively think about how they can be a part of solutions to these problems. Creative Action is a unique blend of art and education – for us, the two are intertwined. We believe that using the arts as a teaching method provides a fun, engaging and inspiring way to learn – it incorporates the whole mind and body.
