by Sarah Rinner, Elementary School Program Director This past Wednesday Theatre Action Project welcomed three MFA candidates from the Drama and Theatre for Youth and Community program from the University of Texas’ Dept. of Theatre & Dance (DTYC) to be a part of our monthly Skill Share where teaching artists and guests share their skills with attendees. The workshop was well-attended and well-received. Our teaching artists had an opportunity to participate in new activities and share their teaching experiences with our colleagues from UT.
The Skill Share was both inspirational and validating, as we discovered many common methodologies and practices between their work in the DTYC program and our various afterschool classes. We explored the importance of working with students with special needs, creating routines for pre-k and kindergarten youth, and tried our hand at manipulating Cambodian shadow puppets and projected images.
This summer TAP will work with the UT Dept. of Theatre & Dance and the Drama For Schools program during their Summer Institute. We will be offering a World Theatre camp for ages 6 – 15 at the Winship Drama Building at the University in conjunction with the Institute, providing another fantastic TAP camp adventure while inspiring classroom teachers to embed drama into their daily lessons.
TAP’s monthly skill shares are free and open to everyone. Call us at 442-8773 for more information about the next meeting. We’d love to see you!
