It’s not really news that music education has been shown to improve children’s attention span, vocabulary, memory, etc., yet it continues to be a topic that is researched and discussed. This is due in part to the lack of arts based programs available in schools all over the country. That’s why TAP, and hundreds of other organizations throughout the country work to fill this gap.
TAP is all about working with youth to build self esteem and confidence through the arts, whether we are in the classroom, doing after-school programing, or out in the community. TAP helps bring programs into schools that might not otherwise have access to them, allowing youth to gain those tools for creative expression.
Nina Kraus, lead author of the nature perspective, talks about the effects of musical training on the nervous system and it’s implications on education in her recent article “Music Training for the Development of Auditory Skills.”
Nina Kraus’s surmises through her research that musical training and education is like exercise for the body, it tones the brain for auditory fitness. Her research shows that children exposed to musical education have a better vocabulary and reading ability.
TAP is already doing many of the things that Nina suggests needs to be happening in schools all over the country! All of TAP’s programing is geared to using the arts to help youth gain critical life skills. TAP’s Classroom Program Journey Into the Story is a program which uses the arts to help teach children literacy. Heroes/Los Heroes is another program which uses the arts, puppetry and song to help teach youth about conflict resolution.
This summer we also had several fun filled camps that were all about using the arts to help children build their self confidence, whether this is in social situations, the classroom, or on the stage! This week we are wrapping up our camp Songs for the Stage camp and earlier this summer we had fun with our Dance and Drums camp.
Right now we are about to kick off our fall programing and we are ready to continue making an impact on youth all throughout central Texas. Learn more about TAP and get involved today!
