Being Reminded of Amazing Opportunity Creative Action Gives to Austin Artists

by Freddy Carnes, Artistic Associate

While at our teacher training this week at Scottish Rite Theater,I was reminded  why Creative Action continues to grow and attract such gifted young artists. Part of the training was to demonstrate to new teachers the power of using teacher-in-role (or acting out a character) to teach a lesson. The demonstration involved using “The Heroes/Los Heroes” show to spotlight how this technique worked. Mitch Bowman and Stephanie Chavez-Noell are the actors in the show and they performed an excerpt. It was great!

The teachers were totally engaged and played the part of Kindergarten students. The story, the humor and the scaffolding of questions built in to the show allow the actors to demonstrate to the children how to solve conflicts at school and at home.

I was so proud of Stephanie and Mitch for carrying on the tradition of “Heroes” just like other shows developed over the years to teach students about such issues as:

  • Conflict resolution,
  • World culture, and
  • Bullying

I understand their commitment to making each show fresh and spontaneous. I was fortunate to perform in “The Heroes/Los Heroes” from 2006-2010. Mitch and Stephanie have added so many nice touches to the performance that it has become uniquely their own.

Once again I was reminded of the amazing opportunity that Creative Action has given to talented Austin artists to practice their craft. Thank you Creative Action!

About The Heroes/Los Heroes

  • 97% of reporting teachers reported they had new tools to help them resolve classroom conflict
  • 60% of teachers saw an increase in students engaging in a four-step conflict resolution process during any given week since receiving the Heroes program.
  • 89% of participating teachers reported their students have been using vocabulary from the program to help them resolve conflict in the classroom

Excitement for New School Year

by Freddy Carnes, Artistic Associate

I’m very excited about this new school year! I’m leaving the Del Valle ISD and returning to the Austin ISD.  I will be teaching at three schools nearer to my home: Barrington Elementary, Wooten Elementary and Gullett Elementary. I’m particularly excited about teaching at Gullett. This is a new school for us and it is fee-based. Not only does this help bring in new revenue for our organization, but it can help bring in new Summer Camp students and supporters.

I’m also excited about my new Dell laptop. This will allow me to do video editing and expand my tools that I use with the students. I’ve already been working with the Windows Live Movie Maker software and I’m ready for the new challenge. Hopefully we’ll have a wonderful video to share with everyone later this year.

An Amazing Summer

by Freddy Carnes, Artistic Associate

After doing 2 weeks of day camps in Del Valle, helping with the Summer Pageant in the Park, 5 weeks of Theatre Action Project (TAP) Summer Camps at Trinity Methodist and 3 weeks of “World Tales and Tunes” at Stepping Stone Schools in Central Texas I was exhausted.  Not because I didn’t have a fun and amazing summer, but because teaching and performing is so physical.

My favorite memories from this summer include:

  • Seeing campers sing “True Colors” and “One Heart” during “Songs for the Stage“,
  • Seeing the kids really get into putting on costumes for “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream”,
  • Playing “Here Comes the Sun” for the Summer Pageant, and
  • Setting up the backdrop 4 times each week of camp at Trinity.

I feel so lucky to work with such passionate and dedicated staff.  We should all pat ourselves on the back for such an amazing summer!

P.S. My only memory of the first day of school was 1st grade.  I stopped halfway walking to school and was met by my 1st grade teacher and my mom trying to convince me that school would be fun, and it was.

Freddy’s 7th Year at Theatre Action Project

by Freddy Carnes, Artistic Associate

I am coming up on my seventh anniversary with Theatre Action Project (TAP) and  I have loved every moment!  It is the best kind of non-profit organization:

  • It does amazing work every day with the children of Central Texas.
  • It is a model for arts education.
  • It is also a model for how an employer treats its employees: with respect and empowerment.

I have proudly told many people that I work for such an amazing company.

Natalie Goodnow (left) and Brian Fahey (right, with Carol Ann Willhite and Chelsea Gilman) will be leaving TAP soon, and we will miss them)

I must also say that two of the best people who also happen to work for TAP will be leaving soon.  I have worked with Natalie Goodnow since 2007, first touring with her in “The Heroes/Los Heroes”, then working with teacher training.  I found her gentle and giving.  We will miss you, Natalie.

Brian Fahey has been a wonderful human who also works with all of the touring shows and markets many of our programs including summer camp.  He has brought such intelligence and energy to his job that sometimes I forget how hard his job is.  You will be missed, Brian.
